When I start listening to Christmas music, and that’s right around Thanksgiving, this is usually the first track I put on the ole iPod. And it usually stays on repeat for several days.
Christmas Lights might throw someone off at first; it starts out talking about fights, poison in the blood, seemingly, a relationship spiraling downward. Merry Christmas, everybody! But the lyrics to the chorus are the opposite; uplifting, hopeful and the embodiment of what the feeling of Christmas should be for everyone:
Those Christmas lights
Light up the street
Down where the sea and city meet
May all your troubles soon be gone
Oh Christmas lights, keep shining on
I’m not saying Christmas lights will solve all your problems (wouldn’t it be great if they did?), but I think that in the song they serve as a beacon for hope for better days to come. I’m getting deep, you guys!
As for the video, it’s just great. Quirky Coldplay theatrics, three violin-playing Elvis’ (or is it Elvi?), a group sing-a-long complete with a simultaneous balloon release. What more could you ask for, really?
